Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show

The Emmy-winning comedian and her best-known character split the bill, Jekyll-and-Hyde style, in this two-part intimate evening. Intimate? Make that seriously intimate. Being a childhood fan of The Carol Burnett Show, I was fascinated by the story of Lawrence's sudden rise to fame as Carol Burnett's look-alike sidekick. But the details of her last visit to the gynecologist? Wow--that's a vagina monologue I never expected to hear! After a brief interlude of outtakes from Mama's Family (Lawrence's spin-off--which may never die, thanks to syndication), Mama herself takes the stage to deliver some crotchety ranting, rapping, and, yep, hemorrhoid scratching. Hot damn--that's some down-home fun! The reactions may range from "refreshingly candid" to "that's weird, grandma!" but fans who like to get up close and personal with their TV heroes will certainly get their wish here. North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, 9501 Skokie Blvd., Skokie, 847-673-6300. Saturday, November 8, 5 and 8 PM. $42.
