Videos by Ellen Bruno

Bruno's riveting digital documentaries grew out of her long career as an international relief worker; a social activist incensed by the human rights abuses she's witnessed, she seems to inspire in her subjects an openness toward the camera. Two of these three shorts consist of interviews punctuated by hypnotic optical flourishes: in Sacrifice (1998) women recount becoming child prostitutes in Thailand to help support their families back in Burma, and in Leper (2005) surprisingly resilient outcasts forge their own community in Nepal. The nearly wordless Sky Burial (2005) focuses on the Tibetan Buddhist ceremony of dismembering and feeding human corpses to vultures, which carry the remains heavenward. 85 min.
