Imagine a Beverly Hills chapter of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, and you start to get a picture of this music. It actually does come from Beverly Hills: that's where Vinny Golia's small 9 Winds label is headquartered, and its small stable of composer-improvisers are certainly conversant with, if not beholden to, such AACM stalwarts as Henry Threadgill, Muhal Richard Abrams, and the collective wit and wisdom of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The Californians have produced a small but steady stream of intriguing projects--from the acoustic quartet led by Alex Cline and his bassist brother Nels, to the potent octet heard on John Rapson's last recording, to the big band Golia has occasionally led in Los Angeles. A passionate, soaring soloist on several saxes and flute, Golia will bring to Chicago a quintet (featuring Rapson and Alex Cline) that moves from a contemporary hard-bop sound to uninhibited free jams in a twinkling. This is the west-coast take on structured freedom, and it's a wonderfully far cry from the film soundstages where too many LA jazzmen grow rich and stiff. Saturday, 8:30 PM, Southend Musicworks, 224 N. Desplaines; 283-0531. (Members of Golia's crew are expected to also perform here Sunday night with Hal Russell's NRG Ensemble in a "West Meets Midwest" confab that's had me licking my chops since I heard about it.)
