Violeta Went to Heaven

110 minutes 2013

Raised in a small Chilean village, Violeta Parra become an internationally celebrated singer and visual artist in the 1950s and '60s, popularizing native folk traditions and spreading a message of peace and tolerance. This 2011 drama, written by Eliseo Altunaga and directed by Andrés Wood (who previously collaborated on the period piece Machuca), presents the major events of Parra's life in conventional showbiz biopic fashion, granting about as much attention to her radical politics as to her turbulent love affairs. The formulaic storytelling has the unfortunate effect of making her extraordinary story feel familiar, though Wood's impressionistic (and sometimes nonrealistic) style is a refreshing antidote to the portentousness one comes to expect from movies like this. In French, Spanish, and Italian with subtitles.
