A crew of hundreds on a ship monitoring a space station is nearly wiped out by a malevolent force in the opening scene of this SF thriller, which cuts away from the carnage so salvagers can have the event explained to them by a surviving scientist. Her didactic dialogue eliminates the need for convincing situations in which Captain Donald Sutherland and his team can discover for themselves the kind of menace they must combat if they want to save the world. Until the diverting special effects take center stage, this story, about an alien intelligence that builds an army out of flesh and metal, pathetically exploits genre conventions without generating self-reference, camp, or thrills. Based on a comic-book series created by Chuck Pfarrer, who wrote the screenplay with Dennis Feldman. Directed by John Bruno; with Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin, Marshall Bell, Julio Oscar Mechoso, Sherman Augustus, Cliff Curtis, and Joanna Pacula.
