Compelling original works from playwrights Brett Neveu and Mat Smart buoy this quirky, eclectic short play festival curated for LiveWire Chicago Theatre by Chris Zdenek. The roster of six pieces ranges from Hilary Williams and Emily Clairbourne's delightfully geeky song and sketch routine, Gretchen & Regina, to Smart's diamond-hard A Sudden Fluke of Physics, about a car wreck that seriously injures a couple. Sharing the theme of "feast"--and, somewhat annoyingly, a single line ("I can't remember the last time we were all together.") chosen through an online vote--the selections cohere tightly around the touching, sometimes juvenile rituals involved in sharing food. Neveu's Picnic Meeting Sack Lunch Reunion sets the stage with a twee, grownup version of the cafeteria lunch swap. Also notable, though out of place in its excessive grimness, is Bilal Dardai's The Short Straw, about a man forced to execute his brother. --Keith Griffith
