Viva la vie

Claude Lelouch's 26th feature film adds a pat social consciousness to his usual goopy romanticism and feeble, pseudomodernistic narrative tricks. An industrialist (Michel Piccoli) and an actress (Evelyne Bouix) disappear simultaneously under mysterious circumstances; apparently, they've been kidnapped by aliens in a quixotic plot to warn the earth against nuclear proliferation. A large number of name actors are on display—Charlotte Rampling, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Charles Aznavour, Anouk Aimee, Laurent Malet—in an attempt (vain) to avoid the rigors of characterization.
