Voices of the Gods

Al Santana, a cinematographer on Lizzie Borden's underground classic Born in Flames (1983), produced and directed this 1985 documentary about the practice of west African religious customs in the U.S. Several different organizations are surveyed, ranging from a Christian congregation in New York City that has assimilated certain African customs to a Yoruba community in South Carolina that functions exactly like a traditional African village. Santana presents his interviewees with respect while remaining objective about their belief systems; an intellectual provocation as well as an informative report, this encourages viewers to draw their own conclusions about the value of tribal traditions in modern, secular society.
