New sushi spot from the owners of Ping Pong, just across the street.
Like Ping Pong, the Chinese restaurant run by the same owners across the street, Wakamono is a tiny BYO spot with sleek modern decor. I refuse to use the word japas, which is what the menu terms small bites and appetizers, but it doesn't really matter what you call the red snapper sashimi with truffle oil that we had to start with--Id eat my finger if it was covered in truffle oil and toasted sesame seeds. The cutesy names don't end there, though: a dolled-up California roll is the Hotel California Roll, a spider roll with soft-shell crab is the Peter Parker Spider Roll, and a spicy maki with smoked salmon and salmon eggs (very yummy) is dubbed the Oedipus Roll--not exactly the most appetizing moniker. We enjoyed the signature Wakamono maki of lightly seared salmon and tuna laid over a roll stuffed with shrimp tempura, and while the he Sushi Luxury combo of eight nigiri and a run-of-the-mill California roll didnt bear any surprises, it at least relieved us of the burden of choosing.
