When: 2009

Anyone who’s ever wondered about the day-to-day life of an up-and-coming rapper should follow Wale’s Twitter. Though he’s signed to Interscope, his posts about commuting to out-of-town studios, recording in marathon sessions, and writing basically nonstop give the lie to the flossed-up image so many major-label MCs like to project—he’s hardly lounging around waiting to shoot his episode of Cribs. Wale’s work ethic, along with his sharp lyrics, effortlessly casual delivery, and mellow, regular-guy image, has redoubled his buzz since his 2007 mix tape 100 Miles & Running (with its Justice-jacking “W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E”) made fans out of everyone from suburban party kids to A-listers like Pharrell and Jay-Z. I just hope that when his debut album blows up—it’s supposed to come out this year—he stays this hungry. He’s already got some mainstream momentum—the recent “Chillin” features Lady Gaga—but he’s also sticking to his D.C. roots: on this tour he’s being backed by UCB, a group that normally plays a heavily funky D.C.-born party music called go-go. Mic Terror, BBU, Dave Coresh, and DJs Vic Lloyd and Chaise Marcel open. —Miles Raymer
