Tom Arvetis has condensed Sharon Creech's 276-page young-adult novel—the tale of a 13-year-old abandoned by her mother—into less than two hours of stage time, and done it with remarkable skill. Of course he got help from an able cast led by a pair of likable, energetic actors (Baize Buzan and Tanya McBride), and a director who keeps the complicated, fast-paced story moving without sacrificing coherence. Arvetis's adaptation isn't perfect. Not knowing the novel, I stumbled over occasional holes. And some who did know it were disappointed to find that Arvetis had cut their favorite scenes. But these are minor blemishes on an otherwise fine production. —Jack Helbig
