Popular North Shore institution with stained-glass decor, famed apple pancakes.
There's still a line around the building on weekends at this Wilmette institution, now part of a national chain. The ambience is a leftover from the 70s, when Robert Redford's crew filmed scenes for Ordinary People in the restaurant. There's much stained glass ornamentation, huge Tiffany-style hanging lamps, and enveloping dark oak tables and booths. The famed apple pancakes are cloyingly sweet, heavy as bricks, and best shared. Kids love the silver dollar pancakes, and the omelets are the superfluffy variety. Prices have gone up and portions have shrunk over the years, but it continues to draw locals for hearty breakfasts all day, every day -- especially after church on Sunday.
