Henning Mankell's fictional cop Kurt Wallander has appeared in dozens of novels, theatrical features, and TV movies in Sweden; this 2009 police procedural, made for television but also released to theaters, introduced Krister Henriksson as the surly, aging police captain. After his housewarming party is interrupted by a bomb attack on an electrical facility, Wallander wrestles with a series of murders and similar bombings in his sleepy town of Ystad. Officious federal agents pour in, and only after the predictable trampling of civil rights and subsequent moralizing does the suspense pick up. Directed by Charlotte Brandstrom, this suffers from its small-screen origins; it has the doleful, constricted feel of the Swedish Girl With the Dragon Tattoo adaptation. In Swedish with subtitles.
