Ward & June Are Dead | Annoyance Theatre | Improv/Sketch | Chicago Reader

Ward & June Are Dead Member Picks

When: Sundays. Continues through Dec. 28 2008

The two members of The Union, Corey Rittmaster and Monique Madrid, are husband and wife, which makes some of the bits in this romance-centered sketch revue funnier--as when two teens muster the courage to slow dance with each other. But there aren't enough surprises, and it's too easy to take your eyes off the performers. Several scenes are built on clever ideas--a ventriloquist comes on to his doll--but aren't executed with enough charisma or sharp timing to get big laughs. Rittmaster and Madrid do show some skill with expressing awkwardness through physical comedy, particularly in a scene in which lovers attempt to join the mile-high club. --Ryan Hubbard
