Washer/Dryer The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 11 2015

Rasaka Theatre Company’s midwest premiere of playwright Nandita Shenoy’s new farce takes a look at the inevitably cute, and challenging, cultural differences that ensue after a quickie marriage between Sonya, an Indian-American actress, and Michael, a Chinese-American freelance writer. The problem? The relationship includes four more nosy and temperamental parties: Sonya’s “best gay boyfriend” Sam from downstairs, rule-worshiping co-op board president Wendee, Michael’s busybody mother, Dr. Lee (played by a wonderfully exasperated and all-too-blunt Cheryl Hamada), and last but not least, Sonya’s beloved washer/dryer. Packed with too many comedic cases of misunderstanding and mistaken identity, the show could use more insight into the couple’s feelings for one another and connections to their culture, particularly Sonya's (whose family is never seen). —Marissa Oberlander
