Local five-piece Miles From Exile released their download-only self-titled debut last summer, and though they modestly call it an EP, I think that does its richness a disservice. After I first listened to its five long, meaty tracks of progressive thrash, with their dual (and dueling) guitars, unpredictable shifts in tempo and atmosphere, and about 40 different vocal styles—often changing within a line—I felt like I'd fast-forwarded through half a dozen wildly different metal full-lengths. This kind of kitchen-sinkism can be a weakness, but Miles From Exile sound like the sort who think everything all the way through; whatever they're doing, it's on purpose. And it works—though you need to stay on your toes at all times to really appreciate this stuff, it's got to be huge fun live. —Monica Kendrick Wastegate headlines; Hemi, Speed Freak, and Miles From Exile open.
