Watch the Throne: Jay-Z & Kanye West Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard

When: Wed., Nov. 30, 7:30 p.m. and Thu., Dec. 1, 7:30 p.m. 2011

Odds are that Jay-Z and Kanye's Watch the Throne (Roc-a-Fella) won't be the biggest-selling album of the year thanks to the retail juggernaut that is Adele's 21, but it's a shoo-in to be the biggest by several other metrics. For one thing, there's the simple matter of two of the biggest pop stars in the world teaming up—imagine if Mick Jagger and Robert Plant had decided to knock out a collaborative record in 1972. Fortunately the fleeting novelty of the setup is quickly overshadowed by the quality of the music, and despite what some cranks say, Jay and Ye have yet to peak. The recording sessions' relaxed atmosphere of friendly competition—they were held in a series of international luxury hotel suites—has resulted in performances that are almost casually virtuosic; that impression doesn't wear off even when they get deep about politics and personal issues, which happens more often than you'd expect. Tonight's show is the first of two back-to-back Chicago performances, and early reports of the tour describe a live show as extravagant as the album. —Miles Raymer
