We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists

This engrossing political documentary centers on the free-form user group Anonymous, which organized worldwide protest against the Church of Scientology in 2008 and played a pivotal role in the Arab Spring protests of 2011. Enthusiastic "hacktivists" sing the virtues of civil disobedience and freedom of information, their commentary rousing but also clearly biased. Director Brian Knappenberger doesn't devote much time to opposing viewpoints and rarely considers the long-term consequences of the Anonymous actions; they tend to register as ends in themselves. Adam Curtis's BBC series All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace addressed some of the same subject matter with far greater complexity.
