We Are Not These Hands The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 17 2011

A would-be gonzo journalist named Leather travels to a ruined country to research a novel. Upon arrival, he's a sniveling mess, kvetching into a tape recorder about the primitive customs and filthy conditions. He's emotionally and pragmatically unprepared for the elements—the least of which are Belly and Moth, two 15-year-old girls looking to sleep their way out of town. The political overtones of Sheila Callaghan's one-act are too pretentious and broad to have any real impact. The play fares better at a personal level: the defunct country's residents speak a poetic, feral, Anthony Burgess-esque version of English that interestingly limits Belly and Moth's ability to communicate with Leather. —Dan Jakes
