To the editors:

Harold Henderson's report on the proposed Loyola University landfill in Lake Michigan (Sept. 23) made an excellent presentation of various facets of public policy questions involved.

However, his mentions of possible resulting erosion damage to neighboring shorelines did not make clear that the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners has acted to determine objectively and scientifically whether the Loyola landfill will adversely affect parks beaches and shores.

The Board has contracted with us to implement an innovative concept of ours: mobilize a select team of internationally recognized coastal scientists, including specialists in various subdisciplines, to work together in evaluating the Loyola project for any possible negative impacts on parks beaches and shores.

So far as we know, this is the first time anywhere that such a multidisciplinary team of coastal scientists has been activated to evaluate proposed coastal construction for environmental impact. The team, all holders of doctorates and all experienced evaluators, includes experts from these universities and institutions: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, University of Delaware, University of Florida, Queen's University at Kingston (Ontario), University of Miami, Purdue University.

The team is already at work studying reports and data prepared by Loyola's consultants as well as a mass of historic and new baseline data on the Chicago and neighboring coastlines. When all available relevant data is in, the team will assess any likely erosion threats, suggest any indicated design changes to mitigate possible negative impacts or to enhance the shoreline, and recommend postconstruction monitoring procedures for any possible future mitigation.
