We Live Again

Rouben Mamoulian's tepid 1934 version of Tolstoy's Resurrection, with Fredric March as the prince who falls in love with a peasant girl (Anna Sten, who was being groomed as a threat to Garbo). The screenplay represents the unlikely collaboration of Maxwell Anderson, Preston Sturges, and Leonard Praskins; Gregg Toland shot it, and the handsome images stop it short of total disaster. With Jane Baxter, C. Aubrey Smith, and Sam Jaffe.
