Weirdos | Annoyance Theatre | Improv/Sketch | Chicago Reader

When: Sundays. Continues through July 31 2011

The folks who brought you Co-ed Prison Sluts are now staging a children's show packed with eccentric characters and colorful, loudmouth puppets a la Avenue Q. But the results are surprisingly tame and more than a little lame. The comedy is thin, the characters flat, the sketches rough and unfocused. My ten-year-old daughter--who dubbed the show "just okay"--said she thought Weirdos was meant for kids much younger than she, and yet even the smaller ones in the audience seemed restless. As for us adults, well, it was clear by the second sketch that this was going to be one of those entertainments parents have to endure, not enjoy. The four-person ensemble performs with energy and spirit; it's too bad they couldn't be part of a more polished, satisfying show. --Jack Helbig
