Welcome to L.A.

Alan Rudolph's first feature (1976) finds him already stirring his characteristic mood of romantic despair, but the La ronde-like structure—a circle of sexual adventures and failed affairs spreads out through the city, accompanied by some excessively moralistic rock songs by Richard Baskin—is a bit too ambitious for the unseasoned skills of a debutant director. The rhythms aren't varied enough to give life and surprise to the rigid concept, and Rudolph isn't yet adept enough with his actors to keep their brief appearances from falling into caricature. With Keith Carradine, Sally Kellerman, Harvey Keitel, Geraldine Chaplin, Viveca Lindfors, Lauren Hutton, and Sissy Spacek.
