If Stagnant Pools were from one of the coasts or Austin or Pittsburgh or Memphis or anywhere besides Bloomington, Indiana, they'd be huge by now. With last year's self-released Bandcamp EP Real Lies, the guitar-drums duo—brothers Bryan and Douglass Enas—generates a compellingly bleak art-rock vibe that reminds me of Joy Division and early Sonic Youth and people with angular haircuts leaning against things and smoking cigarettes in a really cool way. Their upcoming sophomore album, Temporary Room (out August 7 on Polyvinyl), works the same kind of mood but raises the stakes considerably with broad pop hooks that make it a fitting spiritual heir to Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights. Something tells me Stagnant Pools are going to end up much more than Bloomington big. —Miles Raymer This set is part of West Fest; music starts at 1 PM today. 2:30 PM, Main Stage, Chicago between Damen and Wood. A Stagnant Pools also open for Man or Astro-Man? tonight at the Empty Bottle.
