West Fest: Death, Protomartyr, Turquoise Jeep, Turn to Crime, and others All Ages

When: Sun., July 13, 12 p.m. 2014

West Fest brings three stages of music to West Town this weekend: the Main Stage, programmed by the Empty Bottle, focuses on cutting-edge rock, the DJ Stage takes aim at dance-music fans, and the Kid Fest Stage mostly hopes to not frighten children. Sunday's Main Stage lineup likewise mixes veteran talent from the 70s with younger faces: resurrected Detroit protopunks Death wrap up a day of music that also includes postpunk weirdos Protomartyr, local fingerstyle prodigy Ryley Walker, and long-running Chicago drunk-punks Mannequin Men. The DJ Stage features well-known names all weekend long, among them Derrick Carter, Diz, and John Mork on Sunday. As usual at such neighborhood festivals, there are also ton of activities for little ones: the Kid Fest Stage, at Wolcott and Chicago, hosts Baby Loves Disco on Saturday and the Deep Fried Pickle Project on Sunday, among other things. (You can also entertain your dog at Pet Fest from noon till 6 PM both days.) Not so usual: the Windy City Rollers will give roller-derby demos on a pop-up rink, and Let’s Roast Cycles will show off BMX tricks on a temporary ramp. —Luca Cimarusti
