You can go ahead and check off West Town in your annual roll call of neighborhood festivals: West Fest is returning for its seventh year this Saturday and Sunday (7/9-7/10) on Chicago between Damen and Wood. As usual the Empty Bottle has gotten its hands nice and dirty booking the main stage, which features rock 'n' roll, soul, garage, indie goodness, and a touch of transcendental black metal. Local H headlines Saturday's bill, with Hollows, Bare Mutants, Liturgy, No Joy, and the Socialists in support. Sunday's lineup, headliner first, is King Khan (with Gris Gris as his backup band), soul man Syl Johnson (with the Uptown Sound), Those Darlins, A Lull, Team Band, and Purple Apple. The obligatory DJ stage at Chicago and Wood hosts a set of spinners that includes Derrick Carter, the Juan MacLean, Drop the Lime, Dark Wave Disco, and Striz. Kid Fest (Wolcott and Rice) runs from noon till 6 PM each day, with mini golf, face painting, pony rides, a family stage, and more. As part of Pet Fest (Wolcott and Chicago), the Doggy Style Pet Shop hosts a "Suds for Strays" dog wash; proceeds from all Pet Fest activities benefit the no-kill animal shelter Alive Rescue. West Fest runs from noon till 10 PM each day, and the music starts around 1 PM. Admission is a $5 requested donation, with proceeds going to the West Town Chamber of Commerce and the Commercial Park Advisory Council.
