What If We Built an Airport and Nobody Came?

To the editors:

In your coverage of the third airport in Chicago [January 4], there is one element missing, in my opinion. If we locate one down there in the Calumet area, will anyone use it?

Four out of five people who leave Chicago by air do so on business. Also, about four out of five of these people live in the north and west suburbs, or on the north or west side. Will a guy from Northbrook go to Gary to catch a plane?

Not likely! Wouldn't it be a shame if we paved over all that wilderness down there and nobody showed up?
