What We May Be The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays. Continues through July 28 2009

This hour-long, ensemble-created show feels an awful lot like the result of a workshop exercise. Step one: Everybody pick a Shakespeare character to be. Step two: Put those characters in a modern-day situation. Step three: Interact. The characters the ten actors chose are younger denizens of the canon, ranging from Twelfth Night's Viola to Henry IV's Prince Hal, and the situation is a high school graduation party. The interactions are pro forma. The boys play video games, the girls talk makeup. The class valedictorian gets drunk. Couples fight and reconcile. One guy comes out of the closet. And just as in American Pie, there's a pair of long-term steadies who run into issues when it's time to consummate. Little glints of charm appear from time to time--but, amiable as it is, there was no reason for the exercise to go public. --Tony Adler
