White House Down

Rated PG-13 137 minutes 2013

Roland Emmerich blew up the White House in Independence Day (1996) and does the same to the Capitol Dome here; now the only branch of government he's got left is the Supreme Court, and those people can't run very fast. In this hard-charging, fairly digestible thriller, a Capitol policeman (Channing Tatum) takes his daughter on a White House tour and must come to the aid of the president (Jamie Foxx) during a military assault on the building. Politically, Emmerich fakes toward the blue states (Foxx, an obvious Obama stand-in, wants to pull American forces out of the Middle East) before pitching to the red (by the end the commander-in-chief has learned how to fire a rocket launcher). But the lavish spectacle of Washington coming unglued may have its most eager audiences overseas, where a movie like this really pulls in the bucks. With James Woods, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Richard Jenkins.
