At the end of last year local outfit the Smith Westerns called it a day, after successfully evolving from ragged garage-rock high schoolers into slick, festival-ready indie-rock machines during their seven-year run. Westerns lead guitarist Max Kakacek and drummer Julien Ehrlich put together the foursome Whitney not long after, making the project the first to rise from the ashes of the popular local band. Based on the handful of demos recorded so far, they’re writing warm, sophisticated pop that falls in line with the 70s catalogs of George Harrison and Todd Rundgren. Sweeping melodies and sunny moods are the name of the game, and Ehrlich pulls a nice Don Henley as his sweet, soulful vocals and heartfelt hooks come billowing out from behind the drum kit. It’s no surprise that dudes this seasoned and capable would continue creating things that are great. It should be really fun to watch Whitney grow.
