Judging by what I've read about Serengeti's recent Family & Friends (Anticon), I'm not the only critic whose mental picture of the LA-via-Chicago MC has been heavily influenced by "Dennehy," the funny title track from his 2006 full-length—it's an intricate character study of a "Bill Swerski's Superfans" type rapped in first person with the assistance of a thick Inland Northern accent. Family is a considerably less comedic effort, with darker subject matter—mainly the many ways in which interpersonal relationships can cause problems—but Serengeti's eye for detail pays off just as well as on his more lighthearted material. Production duties are split between Yoni Wolf of headliners Why? and Owen Ashworth of now-defunct electropop project Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, two guys who know how to make beats that mope as much as they bump. —Miles Raymer Why? headlines.
