Why We Fight

Produced by Frank Capra for the U.S. War Department, the seven feature-length documentaries that make up the Why We Fight series are probably the most effective propaganda films ever made. Borrowing the galloping montage style of the March of Time newsreels, and adding a dollop of Leni Riefenstahl's rhetorical hysteria, the films were shown to soldiers on their way overseas to charge them up for battle. A few episodes were even released theatrically to encourage domestic production and war-bond sales. This program includes the two most celebrated entries in the series: the first, Prelude to War, and the fourth, The Battle of Britain.
