Wilderness, San Serac Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard Recommended

When: Tue., Nov. 25, 9 p.m. 2008

The third Wilderness album, (K)no(w)here (Jagjaguwar), is built from familiar pieces of postpunk and art-rock, but the band fuses them together so expertly that the result is less Lego bricolage and more marble monument. Sure, front man James Johnson sounds like Mark E. Smith experiencing the delights of Guantanamo Bay, but the chiming, clanging high-goth guitar of Colin McCann (who’s getting some attention for his Lord Dog Bird side project) and the rock-solid rhythm section—sometimes surging and pulsing like This Heat, occasionally crunching and trudging like Laibach—somehow ground his affectations and give them an unlikely dignity. San Serac opens. —Monica Kendrick
