Wind Bird

Sri Lankan filmmaker Inoka Sathyangani makes her feature debut with this somber, affecting portrait of a young pregnant garment worker abandoned by her lover and scorned by her family. Sathyangani, who also wrote the screenplay, minimizes the melodrama by downplaying every plot development: even the revelation that the child's father has been married all along is remarkably understated. Shot by Channa Deshapriya and edited by Ravindra Guruge in spare documentary style, this deceptively simple 2002 video speaks volumes about the status of women in Sri Lanka and the dislocations caused by the country's feverish attempts to modernize. The film's naturalism is heightened by its minimal score—bits of Bollywood sound-track music heard from the windows of homes or passing cars. 125 min.
