Winter Pageant

If you grow weary at the prospect of another New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, you might seek out the humble magic and mystery of Redmoon Theater's third annual Winter Pageant. Closer to a traditional masque than to performance art or experimental theater, yet drawing on both these traditions, this show is performed entirely without words: Redmoon moves the action along via surreal, oddly beautiful props, costumes, masks, wondrous giant papier-mache puppets; and the performers' gestures, movement, and music. According to director-creator Clare Dolan, this year's pageant will be enacted by almost 40 people ranging in age from 5 to 50. Incorporating Shaker songs and choral singing, it's about "living in the city in winter," she says, "when we get cold and hopeless." No matter what one's age, Redmoon's richly symbolic Winter Pageant provides a welcome refuge for the spirit. As Redmoon's artistic director and founder Blaire Thomas says, this is work "for adults which children happen to enjoy." Logan Square Auditorium, 2539 N. Kedzie, 772-9069. December 31 through January 1: Saturday, 5 and 8 PM; Sunday, 2 and 4 PM. $5; $3 for children.
