Without Trace Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 1 2014

America's second black president has just been assassinated. Sixteen-year-old lost soul Trace is picked up, interrogated, and brainwashed by good-natured Will, who purports to work for the most powerful people in the world. It turns out Trace's long-absent father leads a black revolutionary army that may be about to stage a coup, and Will has National Socialist leanings. Playwright Eric Lockley shows no shortage of ambition in his new drama, and his initial interrogation scenes demonstrate admirable theatrical chops. But he gives inadequate scope to his ambition, shoehorning a series of escalating cataclysms into 55 increasingly implausible minutes. Director Carla Stillwell's world-premiere production for MPAACT features some strong performances, particularly Marc A. Rogers as Trace's sociopathic father, but they’re done in by the underdeveloped script. Justin Hayford
