Holiday counterprogramming at its finest. This gut-churning horror indie is based on true stories of tourists disappearing in the vast Australian outback. A couple of young British women (Kestie Morassi and Cassandra Magrath) hook up with an Australian friend (Nathan Phillips) for a car trip to the site of a giant meteor crater. After they inspect the site they return to their car to find it dead, and they're forced to trust the friendly entreaties of a rugged bushman (John Jarratt), who tows them to a deserted mining camp. Producer, writer, and director Greg McLean shot in down and dirty DV, spinning a spare narrative and fully exploiting the wonder and terror of the gigantic emptiness down under. This scared the hell out of me. R, 99 min. Chatham 14, City North 14, Crown Village 18, Ford City, Gardens 7-13, Lawndale, Norridge, North Riverside, River East 21, 62nd & Western.
