Wolf Creek

I was pretty well terrified by this gut-churning horror indie, based on true stories of tourists disappearing in the vast Australian outback. A couple of young British women (Kestie Morassi and Cassandra Magrath) hook up with an Australian friend (Nathan Phillips) for a car trip to the site of a giant meteor crater. After they inspect the site they return to their car to find it dead, and they're forced to trust the friendly entreaties of a rugged bushman (John Jarratt), who tows them to a deserted mining camp. Producer, writer, and director Greg McLean shot in down and dirty DV, spinning a spare narrative and fully exploiting the wonder and terror of the gigantic emptiness down under. R, 99 min.
