When: Fri., Sept. 23, 9 p.m. 2016

Wolves in the Throne Room have been elusive and hard to pin down lately—2014’s ambient, atmospheric instrumental Celestite got a mixed reaction from fans who missed the band’s earlier style, a maelstrom that to many ears provided a template for a new and virulent strain of American black metal. The foundations for that sound were well in place on their previous album, 2011’s Celestial Lineage—indeed, they were there in the early aughts, when brothers Aaron and Nathan Weaver founded the group in Olympia, Washington—and their fundamentals have always been very much within the tradition (highly recommended if you’d love Burzum if not for Varg being Varg). Anticipation is high for Wolves in the Throne Room’s next record, but for this, their first eastern U.S. tour in a couple years, the hook is a gorgeously remastered tenth-anniversary reissue of their debut, Diadem of 12 Stars, on their own Artemisia label. May it serve as a touchstone for both the band and their audience, because this gorgeous, hideous masterpiece helped put the mists of the Pacific Northwest on the global metal map with a big, spine-chilling skull and crossbones.
