Woman in Mind Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through May 19 2013

In Alan Ayckbourn's 1985 play, an English housewife named Susan is trapped in a sexless marriage with a smug vicar in some nameless, ennui-filled suburb. When she knocks herself out by stepping on a rake, she begins hallucinating a better, posher family—only to discover that they're just as unmanageable as the first one. Ayckbourn supplies some funny-sad lines about Susan's predicament, but the script never deepens or darkens into a convincing portrait of madness, and Steve Scott's staging for Eclipse Theatre Company tends to lurch ungracefully between reality and fantasy. The supporting cast is solid (especially Larry Baldacci as a solicitous doctor), but there's not enough pain and longing in Sally Eames's perpetually outraged Susan. —Zac Thompson
