Wombats; Telenovela; Kid, You'll Move Mountains Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard

When: Sat., Sept. 6, 10 p.m. 2008

It’s not really a problem that only a handful of songs on The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation (Roadrunner) have enough heft to stick with you after the CD’s over. The music itself—an energetic, punky take on post-Franz Ferdinand British indie rock—mainly serves to support the lyrical logorrhea of Wombats front man Matthew Murphy, who describes the ups and downs of hipster life in mouthfuls of words that tend to start off kind of predictable and bloggy but then veer into interesting obscurity and occasional brilliance. I’m not so jaded that the line “Let’s dance to Joy Division, and celebrate the irony / Everything’s wrong but we’re so happy” doesn’t get to me a little bit. —Miles Raymer
