Wonderland, Alice's Rock & Roll Adventure Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 24 2015

Like a lot of kid-lit classics, Lewis Carroll’s two Alice books are much more fun for grown-ups, who get Carroll’s in-jokes and twisted wit. Happily, with this Chicago Children's Theatre production, director Rachel Rockwell and musical director Michael Mahler make Alice’s trippy adventures as appealing to children as they are to parents. To do this, Rockwell and Mahler mash the two books together, cutting out large sections of each in the process and knitting it all together with Mahler's kick-ass original score (he and Rockwell cowrote the lyrics). The result is a rock 'n' roll musical full of tunes that soar. Rockwell’s casting is flawless, and Ariana Burks (alternating with Isabelle Roberts in the part) rocks as Alice. —Jack Helbig
