Wonders Never Cease

When: Wed., April 27 2011

Tim Gregory's faithful adaptation and staging of a 2010 novel by Tim Downs overlooks the key difference between narrative sweep and dramatic arc. Downs's story consists of several interwoven plots involving a financially strapped, unscrupulous ICU nurse; his financially strapped, virtuous girlfriend; an underhanded Hollywood agent; a desperate publisher; a menacing loan shark; a little girl who sees angels; and a Mystical Negro. Gregory lets the story lines play out without condensing or focusing them, leaving in all the details that make a novel feel full but drag out a drama. And the production's leisurely pace calls attention to numerous lapses in logic. There's impressive talent in the cast, but the show grinds to a halt long before it's over. --Justin Hayford
