Wovenhand, Minsk Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard Recommended

When: Wed., Oct. 22, 8 p.m. 2008

I loved David Eugene Edwards’s old group 16 Horsepower for its faded sepia tones. It was never a gimmicky neotrad outfit but rather a rock act (it even did a note-faithful Joy Division cover) that somehow captured the feel of death notices from the Civil War. Wovenhand, a solo project that’s developed over the years into a proper band, has a similar vibe but a more crisp, arch sound. Daniel Smith of the Danielson Famile helped produce the new album, Ten Stones (Sounds Familyre), and I can’t imagine a stranger pairing—if there’s anything Edwards’s music doesn’t do, it’s bubble. But with Edwards providing the severity and Smith the relief, they’ve created an elegant rural-goth soundscape with an off-kilter spirituality. —Monica Kendrick
