Woz: A Rock Cabaret New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Recommended Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 2 2014

In this "rock cabaret" conceived by Kimberly Lawson and William S. Rogers, nine performers stationed at microphones retell the story of The Wizard of Oz using very little dialogue, relying instead on familiar hits by Blondie, Queen, Michael Jackson, and others. As often happens in jukebox musicals, some of the songs feel shoehorned in for their crowd-pleasing properties—why else would the Scarecrow belt out Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again"? But most of the musical selections make sense, and some are ingenious, as when the heart-deprived Tin Man performs "I Want to Know What Love Is." What makes the 70-minute show irresistible, though, is the cast, who sell the hell out of the material with hammy charisma and shameless camp. —Zac Thompson
