Writer of O

80 minutes

When the French erotic novel The Story of O was published in 1954, many men insisted that its pseudonymous author couldn't possibly be female, because its tale of a woman's sexual bondage was so obviously male fantasy. Forty years later an elderly editor and translator, Dominique Aury, came forward to claim authorship, explaining that she wrote the book to seduce her philandering lover. This 2004 video documentary by Pola Rapaport includes fascinating interviews with Aury filmed before her death in 1998, and while its dramatizations of the novel suggest unfortunate outtakes from Eyes Wide Shut, its commentators offer a range of intriguing views on Aury's still-controversial embrace of masochism as a transcendent experience. In English and subtitled French.
