To the editors:
Maybe you should suggest to Albert Williams that perhaps he means lectern, not podium. One stands on a podium. It is where one puts one's feet--(as in podiatrist). A lectern is a desk that, in the Middle Ages, professors stood in back of, to read their texts which the students copied word for word--this is where we get the word lecture. Please! A little precision! A little respect for our language!

Albert Williams responds:
One of the definitions for "podium" (in Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary) is "lectern."
