X-Men: The Last Stand

Bryan Singer, who directed the first two X-Men movies, jumped ship to do Superman Returns, taking most of the production team with him and leaving this third (and purportedly final) installment to Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon). Despite all the grand gestures of climax and resolution, there's a pronounced sense of autopilot; the only person who seems to be having a good time is Ian McKellen as the scheming Magneto. With Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, and Patrick Stewart; Kelsey Grammer joins the franchise as the blue-furred geneticist Dr. Hank McCoy—sort of a cross between Henry Kissinger and the Cookie Monster. PG-13, 104 min.
