Xtigone Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 14 2015

Nambi E. Kelley’s reinterpretation of Sophocles’s Antigone, produced by Chicago Danztheatre, brings the ancient story to the present day only partly, with dated characterizations and plot elements that render this drama murky and inaccessible. BrittanyLove Smith brings unbridled passion to the starring role of Tigs, whose brothers E-Mem and Ernesto have been shot by rival gangs. Her subsequent descent into the worlds of gun violence and Chicago corruption feels relevant and timely, especially the use of an onstage pile of empty shoes to signify the growing body count. But the cast’s fiery, raw vocals and uninhibited use of movement feel stifled at times by spoken-word language too focused on rhyming and sequence. —Marissa Oberlander
