CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY

From the desk of the commissioner

Just want to keep you up to date on the progress of "One Book, One Chicago." As you know, this year's efforts were a huge success and laid a solid foundation for "Phase 2" of our program. Now that we know how much publicity this type of thing can generate, we are confident it is a solid fund-raising idea. Below is a list of the books under consideration, along with the corporations being approached for support:

"On The Road": Firm commitment from AAA.

"The Jungle": In a bowdlerized form, this seems a natural for Vienna Beef. Maybe we can come up with a catchy slogan; one already suggested is "One Book, One Sausage."

"The Old Man and the Sea": Governor Ryan pitched Cuban Tourism, but we may catch flak from the State Department.

"The Corrections": Liquid Paper wants in; Oprah oppositional.

"Jazz": Lowball bid from Delmark not seriously considered at this time.

Thanks for your input. By this time next year, we will have plenty of room for multiple copies of the winning book. The second floor of Sulzer should be sufficiently weeded for private functions as planned.
